The Invasion of Iraq Begins

Lilly offers several approaches to judging the figure. It may be considered under the rules for any contention, be it a battle, war, prize fight, duel, or other matter of contest. It could be considered as a siege although a better starting chart for that may be the one for the end of the first gulf war. It can be viewed in terms of the commanders of armies and whether or not they shall be victorious. The question of whether or not two armies will fight is also outlined. Considering that Lilly cemented his reputation as military astrologer/advisor to the Parlimentary Armies during the English civil War which resulted in the execution of Charles I, his rules have been tested and generally been found to be reliable.. Taking the most direct question of who shall win the war, we find that the lord of the ascendant and planets therein along with the Moon represent the attacker while the 7th house, it's lord and planets therein show the other party or defender.
In this figure set for Washington and the announcement of hostilities, the Americans are shown by the first house, its lord and planets therein, and the Moon. Their opponents, the Iraqis are shown by the 7th house, its lord and planets therein.
The U.S. : Scorpio rises with the Dragon's Tail in the 1st and Mars the lord of the Ascendant is in the 2nd in Capricorn. Note that Mars, while very strong by dignity forms no Ptolemaic horary aspects with any other planet and is just past the sextile of the ascendant. The only aspect formed is the separating quincunx with retrograde Jupiter and this is ineffective in questions although it does give some background information. The Moon is a day or so past full and in the Via Combusta in the 12th and trining Saturn in the 8th almost exactly and is just separating from a trine to Venus. Note also the outer planet Pluto is in the 2nd with Mars and that the ascendant is conjunct two fixed stars and the perihelion of Comet Neat.
Iraq : Taurus is on the 7th cusp and the Dragon's Head and Fortuna occupy the house, its lord is Venus in Aquarius in the 4th at the end of her term giving slight strength and applying to trine Saturn and with a separating trine to the Moon in the 12th. Note that Venus is also besieged by the outer planets Neptune and Uranus.
Based on the placements of the significators, victory goes hands down to the U.S. but it looks like the outcome will be much more beneficial to the Iraqis and that American motives are murky. Saturn near the fixed star Al Nath in the 8th with the Moon translating the light between him and Venus in the 4th strongly suggests that the government of Iraq will perish and that casualties will be higher than expected due to the nature of Saturn and the star it conjoins. . Since there are no direct aspects between the significators we must consider that the war is interminable which is highly unlikely, or rely on aspects to Saturn since he disposes both significators or consider ephemeris time to the conjunction or major aspect of Mars and Venus. By this last method, the war may conclude on April 21st with the sextile of Mars and Venus in Pisces and Capricorn. If we look at Saturn and Venus' applying trine to him then we are looking at period of about 4 to 8 weeks for the shooting war, which would give sometime toward the end of April to the end of May, or we are looking at a period just short of 2 years which will probably be the period of occupation and reconstruction if all goes well after the shooting stops. The benefic indicators disposed by Mercury combust and poorly dignified suggest there will be problems with this though it will still be of some account.

Note that the Ascendant is conjunct the fixed stars Alkalurops and Marfik and the probable perihelion of Comet Neat. Note also the Moon's exact trine to Saturn with a grand trine in Air with Venus.. Also Saturn conjuncts Al Nath in the 8th house in the sign mundanely ruling the United States, the presence of Mars and Pluto in the 2nd suggests a high cost but we knew that. Sun conjunct Scheat with Mercury combust is troubling as it suggests treachery and higher than expected civilian casualties. .
I had originally thought the invasion would not begin before the Sun ignited Ikeya-Zhang on March 26th or Jupiter opposed Neptune in May although the Jupiter/Neptune is more likely the conclusion of the war. Comet Neat and the element of uncertainty and diplomatic frustration offered by the Air Trine seem to have decided the issue.
Note that Iraq is mundanely Leo and presently debilitated with Jupiter in that sign retrograde, squared by Comet Neat, and approaching the opposition of Neptune. The 4th house end of the matter shows domestic unrest as shown by Uranus (the chart is set for Washington) and Venus in Aquarius shows the increasingly vocal and domestic opposition to the American administration. If we were to treat this as a siege rather than an invasion, Mr. Lilly's rules could be used to give more detail but as discussed above, there is a more straightforward approach . My reasoning here is that it was a diplomatic matter until the invasion began.

At 5:34 AM local time in Baghdad on March 20, the United States and
United Kingdom forces consisting of 40 cruise missiles and strikes
led by F-117s and other aircraft began conducting military operations
against the state of Iraq designed to disarm Iraq of its weapons of
mass destruction and to remove the Iraqi Regime from power. Based on
this event, a horoscope has been erected based to determine the
likely outcome of the military operation against the state of Iraq.
The method for delineation is derived from Guido Bonatti electional
rules of medieval warfare where 1st house is given to the attacking
party -the United States and British forces, and the country being
attacked - Iraq, is the 4th house. The opposing party - Saddam
Hussein is represented by the 7th house.
The Moon co-rules the 1st house and makes it's next and last aspect
by trine to Saturn. This is a fortuitous testimony for the United
States and coallition forces, indicating that success will be achieved
by careful and steady implementation of its war plan over the
duration of its military operations against Iraq.

for long stretches. However, its likely that Iraqi planned military
